  • The medical brigade will have the collaborative effort of professionals from specialized cardiovascular centers, including the renowned Duke University Health System, Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School), Hospital Escuela, Instituto Nacional Cardiopulmonar (known as Hospital El Tórax), and the Honduran Red Cross.
  • Grupo Financiero Atlántida joins this initiative again, with a historic contribution that will enable the completion of high-complexity surgeries.

Tegucigalpa, May 13, 2024. Under the slogan “Dando Vida al Corazón", through a great solidarity effort, 22 Honduran patients with heart conditions have been scheduled to receive the opportunity to improve their quality of life thanks to a new edition of the Duke Heart for Honduras program, which returns to Honduras Medical Center to make it possible.

This new edition involves intense work for the teams from Duke University and Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as local doctors who are also joining this year to carry out the complex interventions, aiming to provide high-level and excellent medical care that will allow the 22 patients to transform their lives and those of their loved ones.

According to public sources, the provision of health services in Honduras is limited, a situation exacerbated by the lack of available doctors to timely diagnose and treat heart diseases. Official figures from the Ministry of Health (Sesal) indicate that more than 100 people die annually in Honduras due to heart attacks.

Promoting the Well-being of the Honduran Community

As part of its social commitment and vision to promote the well-being of the Honduran community, Grupo Financiero Atlántida is once again present, joining this fourth edition with a contribution of 5.7 million lempiras, an amount that will enable the completion of high-complexity surgeries.

Carlos Girón, Corporate Vice President of Image and Communications at Banco Atlántida, highlighted the impact of the medical brigade. “On behalf of our CEO, Mr. Guillermo Bueso, we highlight the great contribution that this noble program represents for cardiovascular health in the country. As Grupo Financiero Atlántida, we are very excited to be able to collaborate on this cause that aligns with our social commitment to the Honduran community. We support initiatives that align with the Sustainability Objectives that govern our organization,” he said.

Girón also recognized that the work of the entire medical staff is not only remarkable but also worthy of emulation for all that it represents as professionals dedicated to improving the quality of life of people affected by heart conditions who have waited many years to receive treatment and surgical intervention. It should be noted that Grupo Financiero Atlántida's collaboration will enable the completion of all high-complexity surgeries within two weeks, in addition to covering expenses related to all the logistics required for the campaign: patient hospitalization, travel for the medical staff, equipment, meals, accommodation, security, etc.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ricardo Aguilar, Medical Director of HMC, highlighted that for the third consecutive year, Honduras Medical Center has the enormous satisfaction of being the venue for the Cardiovascular Surgery Brigade, an effort that has only been possible thanks to alliances with prestigious national and international medical centers and the collaboration of institutions that have selflessly joined this cause.

Dr. Aguilar also thanked Duke University Health System, Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School), Hospital Escuela, Instituto Nacional Cardiopulmonar (known as Hospital El Tórax), and the Honduran Red Cross, as since we started this crusade, we have been inspired by the desire to bring hope to the lives of a group of compatriots who, without the opportunity offered by the brigade, would find it practically impossible to access such complex and costly surgical intervention.
